Katrina Escapes Certain Death by Mere Inches!

Katrina escaped certain death by mere inches! I was on the ladder pruning an avocado tree and as usual Katrina was supervising me and telling me I was doing it wrong. Then I saw a coconut whiz by her head. It hits the ground, THUD! She turns around and is stunned to see a coconut at her feet. We start laughing and she steps aside.

The tree is very tall as you can see and the old coconut is very hard. Hurray, another tasty coconut for us to eat! We can't reach the coconuts in the tree so we have to wait for them to fall so we can eat them. The meat is very good from these. We have plenty of coconuts that provide us with good coconut water but the meat in those coconuts are not as tasty.

Katrina needs to watch where she stands.

Glad it missed her head! That would have hurt, and possibly more than just hurt... but what a tasty way to go! :)

OMG! I'm glad the coconut missed Katrina's head. Imagine having to explain the accident.

BTW, have you tried extracting the coconut milk? Basically you get the meat and grind it in small pieces on a blender with some water (just enough to not let the blender stall). You can strain the "milk" and use it to make all kinds of desserts like "tembleque", "arroz con dulce", coconut flan, etc. You can also do a little bit of thai cuisine recipes if you like that.

Take care,

Thanks H Jr, We had a nice visit with your parents yesterday. We brought some fruit over. We have so much!

We like the coconuts that have good meat. The other kind of coconuts have a lot of coconut water in them. Right now we are eating 2 or 3 anonies (sp?) every day. You have one day to pick them when they are just right! If you wait a couple of days to long they get eaten by the birds or they fall off the tree.

Your welcome! Yes my parents were very glad you visited and brought such a bounty!

Maybe you need to consider planting coconuts from that "good" palm tree. That particular palm tree came from a seedling from another one down further (by Lucy's house) that was really old and twice as tall believe it or not. Unfortunately, a lightning hit and burned the original one.

I'm glad you are enjoying the anones, I don't think I have ever seen those here in mainland.

Take care,

H Jr.

One more thing, I just remembered my favorite thing growing up: coconut milk ice pops or "limbers" (made in little plastic cups). It definitely needs to be done with the coconut milk from the "good meat" coconuts, just add sugar to the milk and once frozen you can sprinkle them with ground cinnamon. Enjoy!

Wow! Katrina was lucky! Whenever I used to complain about sharks, Stefan would always remind me that falling coconuts kill more people then sharks and lightening combined, Luckly that is just an urban legend, but still! That would hurt! I hope you guys showed that coconut who's boss.

Well Summer, do we have some shark stories for you! We were chumming with 85 pounds of bait at 100 feet in total darkness in 48 degree Puget Sound repeatedly to see 6 gill sharks. I have got many images (I was the fearless (stupid) one getting an arm's length away from them). We also have a little video a friend made of our "adventures." The sharks are an adrenaline rush - the coconut? Doesn't make the list. Maybe the "amusing things" list. katrina
